Tips for choosing the right auto service for you.
It’s normal for estimates from different body shops to vary wildly. One shop might give you a relatively low estimate, while another may give you an expensive one, for the same job. What’s the difference? And when is it alright to pick the cheaper shop?
Any business can advertise, however, you may be better off with an auto service that friends, family or even acquaintances recommend.
In some of the better cases, you may get a recommendation for a small shop, where the owner works on the cars himself.
2. The Auto Service Location and Subsequent Overheads
Large auto repair shops with a lot of employees probably will charge higher rates enabling them to pay their staff.
3. Get Several Estimates
Take your car to several auto repair shops for quotes, this is the best way to avoid overcharging. While it’s important to not to be overcharged, you shouldn’t simply take the lowest quote either.
4. Asking the Right Questions
When choosing an auto service, ask do they provide a written warranty? And if so, for how long, and what exactly does the warranty cover. Most warranties are a one year minimum.
Another important question to ask, is does the shop carry fire and theft insurance. Make sure that while your car is there, it is covered for being damaged, destroyed, stolen or burglarized. Always remember to ask how long they have been in business. Make sure they also have a business license.
Always ask on the parts that they will be using on your car. Are they new, used or aftermarket body parts. New parts are the best, used parts are fine, although they don’t offer the savings people imagine they do. Depending on the repair needed for your vehicle, aftermarket parts can save you a lot of money, and are just as good as the original manufacturer parts. If paint or body work is needed, ask how many coats of paint, and also clear coat they intend to use.
5. Follow Your Intuition
Always trust your intuition regarding any shop you’re considering. If a shop isn’t busy, that could be because clients are avoiding it due to shoddy repairs. If the place is dirty, cluttered, or just generally disorganized, this may reflect the kind of work you could expect.
